The WLICyl is a measurement device for non-contact 3D surface profilometry of cylinders and liners. It is designed for use in both development and production. The measurement head offers excellent lateral and vertical resolution and has a robust and compact design. It is more or less maintenance free and is therefore suitable for in-line process use. The surface profile is measured with high precision in a short time and quantitative measurements are performed inside engine cylinders to calculate surface roughness parameters, coating defects, honing groove and oil retention volume, torn and folded metal areas and other surface information. The measurement head with it’s objective facing the cylinder wall is mounted on a positioning unit which enables measurements at any location inside the cylinder. Positioning of the sensor can be effected manually or under software control. The design of the instrument enables to refind previously measured surface areas and thereby facilitates repetitive measurements for wear investigation. For reproduceable positioning and centering the WLYCyl is put on the engine block by means of adapters. For the evaluation of the surface with respect to the oil retention volume of honing grooves, pores, stray honing grooves, torn and folded metal areas a specific software evaluation package is available.
